Carnival in Flanders, originally released in France as La Kermesse Heroique, depicts a historical conflict between the Dutch and Spanish. During the Spanish occupation of a small Flemish village, the local population learns of the invaders' brutal tactics through accounts from other regions. In a desperate attempt to avoid devastation, they adopt a strategy of feigned death, though this proves insufficient as the Spanish soldiers require periodic respite. The burgomaster's wife then orchestrates an opulent carnival to disarm the occupying forces. This cunning plan succeeds in persuading the Spaniards to spare the village from destruction and imposition of taxes. Recognized as a multiple award-winning film, it faced censorship in Germany due to its intentional parallels drawn between the Spanish and the emerging Nazi regime, a fact that Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, evidently perceived.
